Your phone could SAVE your life!
On June 2, 2014, Apple announced the release of Ios8. With that release was the introduction of a potentially lifesaving tool in the health app called Medical ID for IPhone 4s or later and Ipod Touch 5th generation. After almost a year after the release of Medical ID we still find that many people do not know about Medical ID or how easy it is to setup. Saline Valley Fire Protection District is asking you to help us change that.
Imagine if you were alone out shopping, driving your car, or on a run and you suddenly had a medical emergency that incapacitated you, unable to respond, unconscious.
In this day of technology, it’s become second nature for Saline Valley Firefighters/EMT’s; when on the scene of an alone unconscious patient to immediately go to the patient’s smartphone to try to get vital lifesaving information about that patient. All emergency personnel are trained to look for ICE information, but adding the information as an ICE contact was often useless if the phone was locked.
When setup, Medical ID can be accessed by anyone who can get to your phone; they don’t even need to unlock the device. Medical ID is intended to help emergency services if anything happens to you, it will store relevant information you enter such as blood type, any existing medical conditions, allergies or medication that may affect treatment as well as emergency contact information. You can add as much or little information as you want, including a picture of yourself.
There are 3rd party apps that provide the same function for those who aren’t using Ios8. One in particular is ICE, which also has locked screen access, and adds the ability to send an SOS with GPS coordinates to emergency contacts. ICE is available for Android and iPhone.
Follow the steps below to setup your Medical ID.
