Saline Valley FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTProudly Serving Our Community
Office of the Fire Marshal

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources does not allow burning from April 16 to September 14 of each year.

Homeowners needing to burn vegetative waste must contact them for permission to burn.

Recreational fires are allowed, but must be kept small. A reasonable size for a recreational fire is approximately four feet by four feet.

In the event you would like to have a recreational fire, we ask that you have some method to control it.

Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions you may have or to call 9-1-1 if your recreational fire gets away from you.

There is no charge for the fire department responding to your call for help.  We would appreciate a call right away before a fire has a chance to gain momentum.

We no longer issue burn permits, however, we do request that you give us a courtesy call at (636) 343-9300 to alert us that you will be burning.

The Fire Marshal shall prohibit open burning that will be offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous. The Fire Marshal is authorized to order the extinguishment by District residents or the fire department of open burning when the wind speed is fifteen (15) miles per hour or higher, when the humidity is 50 percent or lower, or when burning creates or adds to a hazardous or unsafe situation.

No application is required for recreational or bon fires.

Application for an ACD permit must be accompanied by a permit from the Department of Natural Resources.

F307.5 Materials

Residential Occupancy Inspections

The Saline Valley Fire Protection District performs inspections for all new construction, rehab projects and any multi-family (three or more occupancies) structures. Each time there is a change of occupancy in a structure or a structure is erected for inhabitation, an inspection is required. Occupancy inspections ensure that the structures in our District are safe for the occupants who will be living in them. A residential occupancy is not merely a fire inspection, but is actually an overall safety inspection of the structure. In the case of new construction, the Fire Marshal and our inspectors are apart of the building process from start to finish.

- Structures with fire places (except gas burning) require a passing inspection from a Certified Chimney Sweep before occupancy will be granted.

- Structures with natural gas or propane are required to have a gas inspection performed by the gas company servicing the structure before occupancy will be granted.

Note: Residential inspections can be scheduled by calling House #1, all of our personnel who perform inspections are also active firefighters; as such there may be instances in which inspections are subject to reschedule due to emergencies being handled by our staff.

Commercial Structure Inspections

The Saline Valley Fire Protection District performs inspections for all new construction and existing commercial structures. Each time there is a change of occupancy in a commercial structure or a commercial structure is erected for business, manufacturing or storage use, an inspection is required. Commercial inspections ensure that the structures in our District are safe for the employees and business owners who use them. Commercial inspections include the installation, operation and testing of sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and hood systems.

Once a company has occupied a structure and the business is in operation, our staff will stop in from time to time for Pre-Fire Planning and annual safety inspections. Structures that are being erected must first have plans submitted to our Fire Marshal for review.

Note: As with Residential inspections, Commercial Inspections can be scheduled by calling House #1, all of our personnel who perform inspections are also active firefighters; as such there may be instances in which inspections are subject to reschedule due to emergencies being handled by our staff.

Construction Decals

The Saline Valley Fire Protection District in conjunction with other Jefferson County Fire Districts has instituted a construction decal program aimed at improving the safety of emergency responders on structure fires.

Decals, such as the one pictured here, are affixed to the electrical meter boxes of residential and commercial structures. The decal tells firefighters  what type of roof and floor construction the stickered structure utilizes. For in stance in residential structures, roof trusses and engineered floor joists are very strong and widely used.

However, when subjected to the heat and gases produced in a fire, they fail very quickly, causing collapse. Based on the time of fire discovery or the amount of fire in the structure, firefighters can make an educated guess on how much time there may be before collapse occurs  if they know what type of building components were used. The decals are affixed to the electrical meter boxes during occupancy inspections, pre-fire plans and safety surveys.

The decals are free and are available by contacting our Station #1 Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

The Fire Marshal's Office is dedicated to serving our residence and customers in a professional manner. The District issues permits for new commercial and residential structures, remodeling, additions, and special use structures such as fireworks stands, fireworks displays, and haunted houses.

In that respect we have entered into an Inter-Governmental Agreement with Jefferson County. This agreement allows anyone building, remodeling, or adding to a residential structure to have a one-stop-shop for permits.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
