The Saline Valley Fire Protection District was established on January 1, 2009 through a merger between the Shady Valley and Springdale Fire Protection Districts, serving northern-central Jefferson County.
The Shady Valley Firefighters Association was established in 1959 after a popular local dance hall burned down. The first apparatus was purchased from the Jefferson Barracks Fire Department for a cost of one dollar. Land for a fire station was donated by the Reibold family off Highway 21 and is the location of what is now Saline Valley Station #3. The Volunteer Association sold fire tags until the voters approved a tax supported district in 1974. Despite the sale of tags, all residents received fire protection from the Association, prior to the district vote, regardless of whether they paid for a tag or not. |

The Springdale Fire Protection District was established in August of 1977 as an all Volunteer District. The District provided Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical and Rescue Services to a population of approximately 10,000 along the Meramec River. In 1979, the District hired its first full time firefighter and built House #2 at 2198 Saline Rd in 1980. The first full time Fire Chief was hired in 1990 to oversee the Districts increasing needs.
Talks began in 2005 to merge the two fire districts in order to reduce costs and the duplication of services on borders between the two districts. This new fire district would also allow for an increase of resources and services provided to the community it would serve. The two fire districts entered into and Enhanced Mutual Aid Agreement in which they shared a Fire Chief, Training Officer, and Fire Marshal, in addition to resources and equipment. |

A vote to approve the merger passed in August of 2008. The Saline Valley Fire Protection District began handling emergency responses on January 1, 2009. Since its inception, the District has been able to hire three additional full time firefighters, which put three full time firefighters at every station, 24 hours a day. The District has also taken delivery of a new 75 ft ladder truck, the first of its kind for our community and a new midi-pumper for House #2 in December of 2009. Saline Valley will be placing a Heavy Rescue Squad in service in 2010.
The Saline Valley Fire Protection District employs a Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Training Officer, 27 full time firefighters, and two administrative assistants. The full time firefighters continue to be supplemented by volunteer firefighters. The District provides fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, and water rescue services, in addition to education and prevention programs to the community. |
