Training for the month of November has always included live fire evolutions for the firefighters of Saline Valley. However this year, the live fire evolutions are exploring new tactics and keeping the firefighters closer to home.
In years past, the District has had surrounding agencies cover the Saline Valley stations while our firefighters had to go to Festus Fire Department’s training tower to complete their live fire training scenarios.
This year, members of the District participated in a class that not only explored different tactics, but also provided plans for an easily constructed burn building meeting NFPA and ISO requirements. |
|
Rock Community Firefighters also attended the class and erected the structure behind their Station #5. This has allowed for our firefighters to train with mutual aid districts, which is also required by ISO and keep our firefighters in their stations as they rotate over to Rock Community for the live fire evolutions. The District has always enjoyed a strong working relationship with the surrounding agencies and this opportunity gives the firefighters the chance to reinforce these working relationships.
The District plans on erecting this structure early next year for more in house and mutual aid trainings. |

On November 15th the District hosted the National Weather Service’s Skywarn Storm Spotter class. The class was held at Station #1, 1771 Springdale Blvd, Fenton, MO 63026 and was provided free of charge to the public and surrounding agencies. Approximately 35 people attended the class.
The class was taught by a Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in St. Louis. As firefighters are often handling emergencies during bad weather or responding to weather related disasters, the class was provided to help firefighters make more informed decisions while working an incident based on weather conditions they observe.
At the end of class the attendees were given the option to be added to the Storm Spotter database.

On Tuesday, February 7th, individuals, schools, businesses and government agencies will take part in the “The Great Shake Out”. Here is an excerpt from the Shake Out informational Pamphlet.
The central United States is earthquake country. A large earthquake could become an unprecedented catastrophe, affecting multiple states and have a devastating impact on the national transportation system, electric power grid, and economy. With earthquakes as an inevitable part of our future, individuals and families must make plans and take actions to reduce the consequences of these disasters.
What we do now, before a damaging earthquake strikes, will determine what our lives will be like afterwards.
Scientists estimate that there is a 25-40% probability of a damaging earthquake occurring in the central U.S. within the next 50 years. With this in mind, the Central United States Earthquake Consortium and its Member States organized the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut (www.shakeout.org/centralus), an earthquake drill and preparedness activity which allows everyone to become better prepared for earthquakes. The ShakeOut is designed to help individuals and communities in the region get ready for these earthquakes, practice how to protect themselves, and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.
Saline Valley encourages everyone to have a plan and drill with your families and employees on emergency events such as earthquakes, tornadoes, winter storms and floods. For more on disaster preparedness information, please click on the links below. |
